Lake Nyos: A Volcanic Time Bomb Ready to Explode
The 1986 Lake Nyos disaster is one of the deadliest natural events in history. On August 21, 1986, Lake Nyos, a volcanic crater lake in Cameroon, experienced a sudden gas eruption, a rare natural phenomenon known as a limnic eruption.
The Event:
Lake Nyos is situated in a volcanic region and contains large amounts of dissolved carbon dioxide (CO2) trapped in its depths due to volcanic activity. In 1986, a trigger—possibly volcanic activity, a landslide, or a sudden cooling of water—caused the CO2 to rapidly escape from the lake’s depths. About 300,000 tons of carbon dioxide burst to the surface and spread over the surrounding valleys.
Since CO2 is heavier than air, it settled close to the ground, displacing oxygen in the surrounding areas. The gas spread over a radius of about 25 kilometers, suffocating people and animals in the vicinity.
Consequences:
1,746 people and more than 3,500 animals suffocated to death.
The rapid depletion of oxygen caused many victims to die instantly, without realizing what was happening.
The vegetation around the lake was damaged, and survivors were forced to flee the area.
Why Did It Happen?
The deep waters of Lake Nyos were saturated with CO2 that had been trapped by volcanic processes. Under normal conditions, this gas remained dissolved. However, a sudden disturbance—such as a landslide or temperature change—caused the gas to be released all at once, similar to how a soda bottle fizzes when shaken and opened.
Aftermath:
Following the disaster, scientists took steps to prevent future occurrences. Degassing pipes were installed in Lake Nyos to allow the controlled release of CO2 from the lake’s depths, preventing dangerous gas buildup and mitigating the risk of another sudden eruption.
The Lake Nyos disaster serves as a rare and tragic reminder of the unpredictable power of nature.
