In the Netherlands, there's a church that's been holding a constant service since November 2024, even at night. This is because a family who fled their country eleven years ago now has to leave the Netherlands because of the law. They took refuge in the church. The police aren't allowed to interrupt a church service, so it continues 24/7 to keep the family safe

The sanctuary within the church wasn’t just for outlaws, criminals, or those wrongfully accused, it also served an important purpose for those who needed protection from the Royal Crown. If you haven’t already read the story of the two princes who disappeared after their father Died in battle it is a must read. Due to the risk of being murdered, the princes’s mother and her surviving children went to a convent or a church for refuge.

In the channel Islands, it was a bit different. We also had the concept of churches being sanctuaries for fugitives, but the coastal churches also each had a path leading to the sea, where a boat was always moored. as long as you were on that path, or percage (pronounced PERKahj), you couldn't be arrested, since you were already on your way to becoming someone else's problem. Usually one of the other channel Islands, or sometimes France.

Not just any metal, probably bronze! The copper in this alloy oxidized over time, giving it that green color you see on all untouched bronze. In my beloved city Bern, Switzerland 🇨🇭, there's a church (Heiliggeistkirche) just beside the main train station, which also preserved medieval walls, which has a clock tower. The tower itself was left as is, but the not anymore functional clock was restored. So they had archeologists and chemists analyze it, found the base metal and coloration and restored it as close to the original as possible, and it looks stunningly beautiful today!
I'm obviously not able to give a neutral opinion, but in my opinion, Bern is the most beautiful city on earth
