Shikhandini was born a female to Drupad. He knew she was born to kill Bhishm. Drupad raised him as a boy. When she grew older it became known she was not a man. Distressed and humiliated she went to a forest of yakshas to fast to death. A yaksha felt compassionate for her hearing her story and offered sex exchange. This is how she became Shikhandi.

Srikandi reincarnated as a male child with mildly female feature due to her purpose in the war of kurusetra. Srikandi was a female princess in her previous life and she swore to avenge her dignity against Bhisma so she did her penance and finally she was reborn again as male warrior with slight remnant of previous female feature

Don't go linking anything with Hindu stories. Lgbt has stories in India but shikhandi's story was different. She was born a girl and unnecessary schooled as a boy because her father draupad had gone insane for a son to slay drona. And she suffered relentlessly due to this forced identity to the point of suicide and successive reversal of genitals with a yaksha. What I m saying is, it wasn't her choice. But a political and selfish play by a egotistical and maniacal tyrant. And her own past birth and tapasya wanting to be the cause of bhisma's demise. It's complicated. But nobody was even thinking about LGBTQ. Shikhandi was allowed on the battle field cause Krishna knew she was required to win bhisma. Otherwise kshitryas would never have allowed him on the field. Such a unnecessary tortured existence. She suffered cause she wanted the pride and status which she was taught she deserved as the 'elder son' of her father. We may never know what she would have actually wanted if she ever had a real choice.

There's also this story about this person named sudyumna. He was the son of a sage. One day he along with his friends went to a forrest which was actually devi parvati's garden. And since they went there to hunt, parvati devi was angry and cursed them for tresspasing, she said that they would be turned into women. They didn't want that so the group pleaded her to remove there curse. But since she couldn't revoke her curse, she said that they could change their gender according to their wishes.

This resulted in sudyumna taking his female form called ila. And ila was the first ancestor of pandavas and kauravas. She gave rise to the kuru dynasty.

I read this version in a book. But google says otherwise๐Ÿ˜…
