My one grandma was a big lover of matching sets or being SUPER matchy matchy. Her closet was a rainbow of head to toe monochrome outfits. Casual would be slacks and a sweater in the same colour and a top a few shades lighter, and then fancy outfits were slacks with a matching jacket and a blouse in a lighter shade. She had a uniform- just in every fun poppy colour you could imagine.

I saw an old photo of my Norwegian grandparents and noticed that they dressed so beautifully, such gorgeous fabrics, everything nicely done. Even my grandfather’s socks were beautiful! Plus my grandmother was an incredible knitter. She could look at a dress and could reproduce it without a pattern, my mom told me. She had a knitting store in NYC and sold beautiful yarns and taught women how to knit. It was a very popular store back in the 50s and 60s.

My grandmother was my fashion mentor, having clothes in all five closets in the house plus two fabric closets. I started shopping in her clothes in high school. While she's been gone for 20 years, I think she'd be proud of how I dress and the lessons I've passed down to my 17 yo who is her namesake.

As someone who likes fashion, but might not be very good at doing it on my self I found that dressing in sets has made me look so much better. I feel it’s like a shortcut to having a little style!
