If you watched this video, you have been lied to. The real origins of the praetorian guard go back deep into the history of Roman Republic. At the time, elected officials were entitled to a detachment of personal bodyguards, called lictors. These bodyguards would accompany their charges wherever they went for the duration of their time in office, both at home and abroad. However, in times of full mobilization, not every military officer or even general held elected office. The first such officer that we know of was Scipio Aemilianus. He selected a group of 500 men to guard his command tent, or praetorium, during the Numantine War of 133 BC. The custom of commanders selecting an additional guard for their own protection on the battlefield would continue and expand, even to those commanders with an official detachment of lictors assigned by the government.
