I bought an entire set of cast iron cookware from a yard sale last year. I paid $5 for 8 pieces because they were all rusted. I came home cleaned and seasoned them. They look new. I'm so happy.

Another trick! Aluminum foil, plus a bit of grease to help out, makes iron oxide convert back to unoxidized iron. So if you ball up some foil, add some vegetable shortening or canola oil or whatever, and give the pan a good rub, the rust will go away with minimal effort.
The aluminum gets 'used up' so you may need a few foil balls to finish the job. Then clean it, then cure it.

My Mum uses potatoes. She boils the peelings in the pan for ten minutes. Then dries it well and oils it up. Job done! She passed this tip on to her siblings and to all her children and it worked every time. Thanks Mum
