Shiva represents pure consciousness which is also known as open space. I know many who are used to the teaching of abrahamic religions have a limited understanding to what the gods actually mean in Sanatana Dharma, in Hinduism.

Many think that Shiva is power because in Kali yug we are lead to believe that men have all the power and the female principle is suppressed. Both of these aspects are within everyone and not just a female or male therefore to suppress women is to suppress your own personal power. Both are related to each other and need each other as meaning (artha) and sound (sabda).
Everything in the universe is a projection of Shiva.
Shiva is the process involving intentions (iccha) and cognitions (jnana)
