I watched the long version sometime in the 90s at a local art house and it was shown with one intermission. On the conclusion that the movie, I wanted to see more. That’s when you know that it’s a great movie.

Looking forward to the 4k version they announced. Classic film. I remember renting this way back when on VHS and one of the only movies that was on 2 tapes.

Well the mindset the longer the movie the more boring it gets, although it can be true, ruined this movie. Some stories need more time to be told well, some less. Simple as is.

Studios were constantly cutting down Leones work. ( see history of ' Once upon a time in the west'...The Good the bad and the Ugly)The original.cut was 4.5 hours. And it was worth every single second of your time. It'san epic story from childhood
to old age. Cutting it in half made it disjointed and jarring with no character development or clean segues. This was a film aimed fairly and squarely at those who appreciate beautiful cinematography and epic storylines. I really don't think modern audiences have the patience nor the intellectual bandwidth anymore to appreciate this masterpiece , especially not without cgi, crashing overbearing background music, explosions and superheroes to keep them awake for 90mins or so . Cinema like this is gone forever.. Childish Marvel crap is all that's on offer on the big screen. Christopher Fraylings' brilliant biography of Leone deals with Leones' issue of snip happy studios.. Well worth a read if you can find it.

I was at that initial screening. It was actually in Boston at the Cheri theater. A reporter asked the night manager how it went and he said his impression was they didn't like it. That offhand comment made it into the newspapers and the film was pulled and re-edited.

There's a 6h original betamax version existing that i remember as a kid watching with my uncle a couple of times.
It's been a long time since watching it, so my memory is vague, but let me tell you a few things i remember which u dont see in the 3-4h versions:
there was more lead-up and character development on the mobsters who chased noodles in the beginning; u find out the guy who threw the frisbee is chinese; eve and noodles went out on another date between florida and when she got shot; noodles talks to max's son at the party; there were at least 2 more times noodles goes to the chinese theatre; i remember joe pesci's character being in more scenes; jimmy o'donnell was there when max faked his death; and there was more character development on fat moe as a kid.
Some of these would have been good to add in, but most of them are implied by the movie already so i understand why they cut them.

I've only seen the full version and if i can compare how different a theatrical cut and a director's cut or original version can be my reference point is the 2 versions of the film Payback. Completely different including different endings the theatrical version has a different tone, much more comedic and the different music in each really shows how much effect it can have on the tone of a film.

PHENOMINAL work of art.
Why would you ever want to "shorten" it ???

Love James Woods. One of my favorite actors of all time. His voice work is also incomparable.

I saw it in the early 90's I was probably 16. I came in a room, a 19 years old girl who i fancied was there, she didn't care about me of course. It was a weird but beautiful moment. I stayed quiet for hours watching both the movie and her... this became, of course, my favourite movie of all time.
