The nebula is located 1,350 light-years from Earth and spans about 25 light-years. This is the nearest active star-forming region to us, only 2 million years old. About 700 young stars and more than 150 protoplanetary disks - embryos of future planetary systems - have been discovered in the central area. The nebula is visible to the naked eye as a middle star in the sword of the constellation Orion. It consists mainly of hydrogen and helium, and different colors show emission from various elements - red (nitrogen), green (hydrogen), blue (oxygen).
