I was a cook on a coast guard cutter back in the 70's and we did month long fisheries patrols off the coast of Washington and Oregon among the Soviet hake fleet. We would regularly have Soviet fisherman over for dinner and they in turn would have us over to their trawlers in kind. I remember them as bombastic, hard working, vodka drinking, and consumers of great quantities of fresh meat and dairy products... lots and lots of dairy products..."F" the vegetables. When arriving for dinner in life boats they always brought these massive loaves of whole wheat bread, pickels, and of course lots of vodka of a brand called "Buffalo vodka" where inside the bottle was always found a stalk of wheat. They enjoyed getting Americans drunk so they, every five minutes or so, would offer up a toast to the Mother land which according to protocol, was an insult to refuse a guzzle of the vodka. Knowing their ploy, we would always offer a counter toast to our commander and chief president Nixon by passing around a jar of pickled jalapeno peppers which by refusing one would be an insult to Nixon. Being hyper-sensitive to hot foods of any kind, that quickly put an end to the toasting nonsense. It was great fun because these wonderful Russians had impeccable sense of humors. Lol
