Always leave in gear. Its the only way to guarantee it wont move. Also always start with your foot in the clutch, it reduces strain on the starter motor

I lost my father to an unfortunate incident where the driver said he hadnt realised the car was in gear (this is what the police told us). Van rolled, hit him, driver panicked and literally drove over him. By the time emergency services came he had bled internally and never made it home. ๐Ÿ˜ข I know this is an isolated event but.

Your parking brake can be "on" but it can fail while your car is unattended. ALWAYS put your parking brake on first (so that holds the weight of the car), then put the car in gear. It's such a simple thing to do, and will save your car being smashed up, or killing someone if the parking brake fails on an incline.

My first car was Opel Vectra '96 with almost non existent hand brake, so I learned to always leave in gear. Since you never relly know how well the handbrake works in any car it's also the safest way to ensure it won't move.
Furthermore, in colder climate the handbrake can freeze as well, and it might be difficult to release it so yet another reason to park in gear.

After stopping, I put in neutral and pull the handbrake. And then I put in first gear.

Well, as you said, it's to make your own fail safe for a parking brake failure. But what many don't know is, it's not always 1st gear you should be in on an incline. Flat roads, 1st gear no problem.

In an incline keep the gear in direction opposite to that of the incline. That is , park in first gear on an upward incline and the reverse in a downward incline.

In Canada, we're required to leave it in 1st unless we're parking downhill, it's part of our safeguarding to make sure that car doesn't move. We're also taught to always start the car with brake and clutch on, or at the very least, brake and clutch, then shift into neutral, then start. However, that last option is lengthy and pointless to wait to start, so we just choose the first option and then switch into neutral when the cars started.

Buuuut, when I moved to the uk and took driver's lessons as I wanted to know the intricacies of uk driving, my instructor actually screamed at me for putting it in gear at the end of the first lesson. He said, "What if somebody got in the car and didn't brake, that person would lurch the car forward." I said that I was sorry, but this was what we're required to do in Canada and that I didn't know it was different in the uk and that's why I wanted to take the lessons, to see and know the differences in driving between the 2 countries.

So, I think the answer could be whichever you're comfortable in, but one day my roommate looked out the window and her fairly new car was in the middle of the street after rolling down the tiny near-flat driveway with only the handbrake on. Since then she too parks the car with it in gear. Regardless of her living in the uk ๐Ÿ˜…

I'm a new driver and never heard of such. Was teached to leave it in neutral and handbrake on. That's it. Wouldn't really risk leaving it in gear, I dont really understand how that works.

Handbrake on, leave in First. Car will not move and cause possible injury if the handbrake has not been fully properly applied. Also, on an incline move the wheel to the kerb so that they prevent the car moving. As a bonus, "anyways" is not British English.

For years, I always used to leave in neutral. One day though, my handbrake cable snapped whilst parked in an unlevel car park โ€“ I have always parked in gear ever since! I later learned that lots of people do this anyway.

Always neutral and handbrake on (unless on a hill), leaving it in first sounds mad to me? Buy new car, collect in front of showroom - forget to check gear - drive new car into car Showroom. The point of gears is to connect the wheels to the engine? Not as a brake? On a hill turn your wheels into the curb if you are that worried about your hand brake!

Hot brake pads expand but will cool and shrink back when no longer in use, some cars use the same pads as parking brake. Always park in gear in a manual car. Parking on a downhill incline turn the steering to the curb as if turning toward the pavement. On an uphill incline turn the steering as if youโ€™re going to move out into the road. This way the kerb has a chance of holding your car from moving ๐Ÿ‘

Depends. I think I actually read it in a guide, if you're facing up, first gear, if you're facing down, reverse. And also turn the wheels to be propped against the curb, just for good measure

I was always told first gear, because it means the car won't roll off if the handbrake fails. But bear in mind that advice came from my boomer parents and my almost boomer instructor, who grew up in an era where cars were basically crap.

You wouldn't leave an automatic in N or D - you'd put it to P. Park. That locks the transmission and prevents it from moving.

Yet people seem so bemused by that. A colleague of mine's car rolled off his driveway one night and at 35 years old had never thought to park it in gear, when I explained it to him he was like a child having a lightbulb moment.

I've got a 2016 Skoda which indeed won't start without the clutch fully in.
