These are three things I wish I knew sooner about Montessori education.

1. From birth: I was reading “the absorbent mind” by Maria Montessori and is amazing how much our little babies are absorbing even in those first months when they seem so helpless. I would’ve liked to do more belly time, more time outside, more sensory activities, more baby wearing… I was just too worry on things that doesn’t matter (like in keeping the house spotless lol)

2. They are different: this is one of my favorites and I am so glad I know this now because it has prevented me to compare my child with others. Montessori is not about making a child do thing first than other children… (let the children be children, right?) because every person is unique and different, is what make us special!!! So as long as my doctor tells me my child is fine, I don’t worry, I don’t care if she is talking more or doing more things than other children… The truth is that it doesn’t matter!!! She has her own path and it is perfect as it is.

3. Observing: this is when I take action. One of the most common questions I get is “Karen, how can I keep my baby entertained” my answer is usually “observe him!”. Because every little one is different, we can only know what will keep them busy by observing them. What is my child interested in? What are the milestones she is trying to master? What kind of activities does she like? What is she trying to imitate?
Then I find solutions specifically for my baby. I don’t say things like “my neighbor’s baby is counting until 10, I should teach her all the numbers” instead I say “Abby seems very interested in cooking with me, I’ll get her few kitchen tools in her size to make it better for her!l”
In my previous video I shared examples, this is one: I was “observing her” and realized she loves putting my shoes on, she was trying so hard, so I decided to get her shoes that she can put by herself, worked out amazing! 💕
