I've heard the term, but all I knew was there was more room in the balloon head case. Now I see why! Thank you, Richard!

Great explanation. The cutaway really helps show it.

Something tells me that the balloon head case had points of failure problems. Considering it could be fit more powder which would be tempting for reloaders, this led to the creation of the more robust modern case design. I think the failure points would likely be incomplete burn of the powder since it could get packed too tight or that some powder would not get ignited by the primer since some would not be inline with the primer hole but beside it, over pressure from a hotter load, case failures near the rim, and even backfiring out of the primer as the "bottom" of the "cup" holding the primer would fold inward on itself and push the primer out causing hot gasses to escape.

I have my Granddadโ€™s 32 S&W. When dad died I took it out and shot it with some loose ammo Iโ€™m sure was Grandpaโ€™s. Some of it was BP. The BP would go through a 90s Chevy truck door. The smokeless would not. The BP were balloon cases.

With modern powders being more reliable and producing higher pressures make little difference with the few grains that won't make it into the case. Besides the fact that loading .32 acp with higher charges is near pointless as little is gained in foot-pounds or velocity in this feeble chambering.
