Sage burning has been a practice for many cultures for many centuries. It is used in the Orthodox Christian faith and Church. We have a practice of asking the priest to come to a new home and cleanse it of any malevolent spirits or entities, and to bless the house/family. Many of us children of the tribes are no longer physically connected but have some spiritual connections. I can trace the Native American on father’s paternal side that I wasn’t even aware of. We are descended from the half brother of Pocahontas. The maternal side of my father which is supposed to be much closer and higher in Native American is all but impossible to trace. People did not want to be moved from there land. Go on a forced walk away from all they knew. They didn’t want to be sent to Indian reform schools. They did what they had to fit in. Assimilation. They easer way. They may have married in with the locals. But I think yes if you are at a tribal sanctuary and you haven’t been invited to perform then yes perhaps as a guest of course you should refrain that’s just polite I suppose. But as multiple cultures from across the world use the sage and our lost Native Nations Children, we are all entitled to use the sage.
