I think at one point Mother 2 was meant to pick up right where Mother 1 left off with the same cast, but later on they decided that would have been tired and limiting for no reason.
But think about it, the final version of Mother 1 i.e, the localization ends with Ninten's father calling him while he sleeps. What happens at the beginning of Mother 2? Ness's father calls, waking him up. At the very least, I think that was wholly intentional. I'm glad they didn't go that route though because the more fantastical world built by Mother 2 stuck with me so much more than Mother 1.

Yeah both games are very different while also sharing a lot in common at the same time we also see how in both games Giygas grows more evil as a character so defiantly not a remake of any sort

My thought process is that Mother 2: Gyiyg Strikes Back is meant to be a corrolary to Mother.
The big "thing" with Mother is that it's about Gyiyg's strategy: he's attacking before the prophecy says he should to try to suprise Earth. Mother 2 is meant to be the prophecized invasion, and Gyiyg's downfall.

Mother 1 is actually a sequel to Earthbound that comes after Mother 3 when the Earth resets.
There are too many weird differences like the Franklin badge functioning differently and the protagonists looking identical and Giegue promises to see Ninten again which is yet to happen in Mother 4

I see it as a sequel, but I think this line of thinking is more of a soft reboot, and not a literal reboot. Like how Metal Gear Solid pretty much refined Metal Gear 2 and reused a ton of beats from it, despite being an actual sequel.
