The MOVE organization was a nuisance to their mostly middle-class, predominantly Black neighbors.

They demanded day and night, through a loudspeaker on their property, the release of their incarcerated brethren after city officials turned a deaf ear to their complaints.

Their profanity-laced diatribes reached only the ears of their increasingly angered neighbors, who eventually staged a high-profile news conference to appeal to Governor Richard Thornburgh to take action.

What followed was a military-grade siege of the MOVE headquarters by the Philadelphia Police Department.

Arrest warrants were issued for the adults inside the building, and police had a court order to remove the children, who had been illegally kept from school.

Despite knowing there were children inside, police fired more than 10,000 rounds of ammunition over a 90-minute period.

After an incendiary bomb made of C-4 plastic explosives was dropped on the house, the fire it caused was allowed to rage through the neighborhood.

Eleven people inside the house were killed, including the five children, who ranged in age from 7 to 13 years old. Only Ramona Africa and 13-year-old Birdie Africa escaped, though both were badly burned.

Remember kids, if you ever find yourself thinking "the government/police would never do something like that!" remind yourself that "oh yes they would!"

It recently came out that Penn still has some human remains from the bombing and refuse to hand them over to family members and surviving MOVE members

Grew up there, watched it happen live on TV. I still remember the sounds of my mother weeping. The police knew children were in there, everyone did, MOVE was negotiating to get the kids out.

I mean you should never give cops or the government the benefit of the doubt, there isn't a low they won't stoop to.

This is why so many people don't want to report their neighbors to the police. Imagine: make a noise complaint about 1 of your neighbors, get several blocks burned to the gorund by the police. Wait, we don't have to imagine.

When we tell ourselves that the current threats of violence have never happened before, yes it has. This country has a long, violent history and that history is repeating itself.

It’s tragic that people who actually practice what they preach are always taken too soon.

Why are all these pictures in black and white, they definitely had colored pictures in 1985. They do that to make the event seem like it happened a long time ago

Never a reason to claim America was ever great unless you appreciate others suffering
