Saw this movie when was a teenager. Hadn't thought about it again until saw it while scrolling. What a cast! ... Who needs TV when you have YouTube & internet.

One of the forgotten gems of the early 80's. The acting is superb for an ABC mini-series. Of note, Rutger Hauer, and Derek Jacobi put in particularly good performances.

Thank you for this show. I use to have the whole series on VHS decades ago and have been looking for it since it was lost in a move. Rutger Hauer as a brunette was amazing.

wonderful series....acting and the sets absolutely top notch. Derek Jacobi is masterful as Der Fuhrer....also I'd forgotten Randy Quaid was in this and what a strong performance as Putzi Hanfstaengl. Would be brilliant if they could remaster it into HD quality, that would be the only thing that could improve it as a production.

The speech which ‘Hitler’ gives from 27:40 is incredibly realistic with all the arm and body movements. An amazing achievement by Derek Jacobi. So amazing I watched it twice.

There are some flaws in the beginning of the movie. I have read Speer's diaries he wrote in jail and also the very good book by the late Gitta Sereny " Albert Speer ,his battle with truth". She spent many months at Speer's house after he was released at the end of his term of imprisonment and sets a very impartial portrait of the man, not hesitating a minute to corner him when he contradicts himself. I do recommend to anyone interested in this period to read both books. The first error at the beginning of the movie is that the relationship between Speer and his parents were not very good even when he was a child, and especially with his mother. The parents used to favor their other two sons.  Henry T. King, deputy prosecutor at Nuremberg who later wrote a book about Speer, said  "Love and warmth were lacking in the household of Speer's youth."(source Wikipedia). The parents would always give reason to their elder sons even if they had been wrong, Speer explained to Sereny. Another flaw in the movie (I have not finished to see the 1st part), is the speech of Hitler at the university. Speer explains in his diary and in the interview with Sereny, that contrary to his usual ways, Hitler made a very calm speech, not at all the usual shrieking and exalted one.

When the book came out Speers wife was furious with him for taking away the happiest memories she had far removed from the rest of Germany, living a privileged life in Hitlers circle. This portrayal may make for dramatic contrast, but is not as things were.

The opening title sequence with the bulldozer and the bodies is as grim as it gets. Imagine being a kid in Europe during either World War as was my own father growing up in the last and consider the impact this horror made on the rest of his long life.

I love watching Derek Jacobi, what a wonderful actor he is. Rutger is another fine actor. You don't see movies like this now, except Downfall or Das Boat.

This is an early 80s gem for a TV movie. Blythe Danner, who plays the wife of Albert Speer (Rutger Hauer), is the mother of Gwyneth Paltrow.
