Insects are critical to the survival of most other animals, including humans. But many insect species, from beetles to dragonflies to butterflies, are declining in abundance due in part to human activity. For Earth Month, Insectarium host Dr. Jessica L Ware gives tips on small things each of us can do to make a lasting impact and help insects thrive for years to come.

I'm getting old and my dad is very old. We remember times when there were so many more insects of all types. It's very sad.

Oppose your HOAs and their green lawns in favor of native plants. Boycott pesticides wherever possible. The lobbyists will win the vote every time, so push back yall

When I lived in NY the neighbors were upset that I didn't mow the lawn around the back gate. A patch of milkweed had randomly sprouted so I refused to cut it down before all the monarch butterflies had migrated out of our area.

Mow-free May is excellent to help our insects. I don't have a lawn I have a meadow in front of my house and really enjoy the local wild flowers that pop up on their own without any work. Not fertilising the grass is essential for that because most wild flowers don't like nutrient rich soil. Talk to your neighbors and local politicians about the about this cost free way to help our insects. If you like a tidier look you can mow the edges or mow shapes into your meadow to create an interesting look

How many insects die on the windshields of cars/trucks each year? I’d wager it’s an astronomical amount!!

I use preying mantises and ladybugs in my garden instead of pesticides and I plant certain plants that certain bugs don’t like instead of pesticides 🥰 and I provide a place for clean water to drink for my insect friends 🥰 and I rescue exhausted bees whenever I see them

Here in Germany, our hardware stores/ DIY stores (don't know which is the correct term) offer flowers that are explicitly pollinator friendly. Do you have that in the US?

Mow less, bee more. Let the wildflowers grow and bloom.

Overseeded my lawn with clover for natural nitrogen production that also benefits polinators.

I wish I was any good with plants. I'd love to have a few native potted plants for the buggies.
