First of all it's Flemen's response. It's the turning up of the lips to try and smell pheromones. A lot of animals do this even cats. When males trail a female females pee and they TASTE the urine. They don't drink gallons of it. It's cause the pheromone receptors are in the mouth. And all ungulates from deer to camels to sheep and goat do this. ALL OF THEM. It's normal for ungulates. Horses and donkeys also do this even if they are not ungulates. It's common in nature. Cats do the flemens response around cat urine too to smell pheromones. Thy are just have more pheromones and are easier to detect and females ovulate for longer. Other animals are more subtle an unless the female is ovulating struggle to detect it. And since they have at most a few days of ovulation males need to be fast. So they taste the urine to see who is about to ovulate nd trail the female and protect her from other males. They try to mount but if she runs away she isn't ready(she is in the active estrus. When she goes into passive estrus she will allow breeding.
