How did a nation’s pursuit of a more humane approach to drug addiction end up deepening the despair?

In search of answers, I talked to families who've endured unimaginable loss and walked the streets of the East Coast's largest open-air drug market.

Watch my new documentary to understand the impact of America's Drug Crisis.

The first person ever, who seems to be able to see this problem through directly.

I am a drug court graduate. I turned my life around. I think he is right about needing to have something like that because it comes with help and people holding you accountable. You relearn how to live as a responsible adult again. You get people in your life that help you to put up boundaries and safely navigate your life through the first part of your sobriety which is the hardest part. Of course it is up to you in the end bc they aren't there forever. It sets you up for the best chance, but like I said the choice is your own. For me it was a life changer.

Douglas, I am a huge fan of yours, but I often wonder if there's something you do for fun. Are you ever able to relax and enjoy life at its most basic and beautiful?

Like a lot of people I dabbled in my youth.
You hit the nail on the head when you said lifestyle. You choose you're lifestyle and to me that is abundantly clear with drug addicts, addicts of any stripe actually.
Stop blaming external factors, made up medical conditions etc etc etc. The truth is you took it, you liked it, you took it again. Your choice!

Once an addict always an addict but there has to be hope of some kind and if the circumstances promote it, people do crawl out of hell for the most part.
I've been on Suboxone for years. The first years hardly helped me, but over the 4 years I did pull myself out of some deep deep shrt. The hard part is in keeping a focus on light and positivity... maintaining ones purpose.

Methadon helped solve the heroin crisis in The Netherlands in the 80’s. The junkies weren’t all that much bother except from theft and burglary, but they were slouched on the streets in a very deplorable condition and engaged in prostitution. The free Methadon from the visiting busses took of the worst of their addiction and improved their health. Wellfare state looked after them further along the line

Once Suboxone became a mainstream treatment for the physical addiction there is an out. Authorities should be doing more to make this treatment easily available. Its not perfect but its the best yet.

I have a SAD (substance abuse disorder) and coach those with the desire for change. After 33 years of being a “functional addict” I adopted a discipline that has kept me safe for over 11 years now.

Anathema for some: the very word (discipline) seems to be reviled…

We don't need to make drugs illegal but we need to arrest people for doing other things that are against the law even if they do it because of drugs. Doing meth should not be against the law. Trespassing stealing, littering, assault should not be tolerated.

The easiest way to cure drug addiction in the long-term is to teach children to treat others the way they would like to be treated. Get their parents to do exactly the same, and addiction will cease to exist in the long term. It's harder than one thinks, so as an example. I wouldn't like others to think badly of me, so I have to stop judging others. When I do away with my judgement of others, I do away with my pride and my low self-esteem in one foul swoop because I have no one to judge myself against.

For a long time I think that U.S has so many things to figure out inside their borders. Protesting for other countries in my opinion should not be on their top agendas right now. I might be wrong though.

And start with the fact it's a choice to go looking for drugs. Addiction comes later, but you don't 'catch' drugs and it's ridiculous to suggest that you do.

Or how about tackling the root cause of the issue making sure that all children grow up in loving families with parents that are together and fit for purpose education system...... Just a thought

Common sense would be to legalize it probation didnt work in America for alcohol and the war on drugs has failed. At least with a common sense approach the money rsised could be used for treatment snd people wouldn't die needlessly!
