New information has allowed the Marine Corps to expand on the historical background of the iconic photo of the second flag raising on Mount Suribachi, which captured the “uncommon valor” of all Marines who fought in the battle of Iwo Jima.

I join the Marine Corps 6 October 1981. I watch the movie Iwo Jima with John Wayne when I was 7 years old and I knew I wanted to be a Marine. Watching the flag being raised brings tears to my eyes and a shiver down my spine. Semper fidelis

The ESSENTIAL and absolutely correct words is this video are: ”They are ALL heroes.”
When things get tough, that’s the Corps’ heritage and the individual’s benchmark.

There are times when those not seen or heard are the ones that make the biggest impact. A much needed reminder there is always a bigger picture in life. He knew it wasn't a matter of who raised the flag, but that the flag was raised for ALL. That is a hero. 🙏
Thank you.

As a Marine from ‘98 to ‘06 I always remember being taught since boot camp about the 5 Marines and one Corpsman who raised that flag, I always felt like that Corpsman being there helped solidify our bond between Marines and Sailors. Then I find out they decided years after he’s diseased to remove John Bradley’s name from the USMC war memorial and say he wasn’t in the photo, and now they’re swapping out one Marine for another. After all these years and with everyone long gone I just don’t understand why they don’t leave well enough alone, my heart goes out to the families that were told “actually, you’re loved one is not in this 70 year old iconic photo, like we told everyone he was.”
