JS8 is a cool mode to work. The big plus is that it doesn't decode atmospheric noise like other digital modes like PSK31, RTTY, Olivia and such. It is slow, but not a lot of activity. Seems like everyone hangs out on 20 and 40m for some reason.

For the price of entry, this looks intriguing as a backup or emergency grid-down option for regional comms. I’m in a rural area with a lot of terrain, and have had success with vhf digital modes using andFLmsg and a yagi, but my local contacts are up to 10-15 miles away and using this in NVIS might be a good solution. I prefer digital over voice in a potentially non-permissive scenario anyway.

When you say “run” that little radio for 12 hours, what’s the TX/RX duty cycle within that 12 hours?
Js8call call is ok, it’s just slow. So if you’re used to the speed of something like psk31, get ready to make yourself another cup of coffee. I’m not bashing it, it’s a fine mode, just slow when compared to others. I think even VarAC is faster, but I can’t substantiate that statement for certain.

Dont waste your time trying to work around a fatally flawed platform. Lack of SSB and support for all digital modes dooms this toy.

I love the fact JS8 allows you to set your time clock off of received signals, which is realistic in grid down.
