This is a call to all manta ray enthusiasts who are keen to assist with research, even if you are not a scientist.

Do you frequently encounter manta rays during your sea excursions? If you spot one, you can contribute to their population and distribution study by capturing a photo of their unique patterns on their bellies.

To obtain images of their bellies, approach the mantas in a responsible and respectful manner to avoid scaring them away. From behind or the sides, gracefully and quietly duck dive and aim your camera towards their belly. Ensure to angle your camera in between their gills, while maintaining a safe distance. Avoid splashing, chasing, or positioning yourself in front of them.

You can then send us the images at contact-drc@saveourseas.com with the time taken and the location seen. Also, if possible, the sex and a description of their behaviour, e.g., cruising, feeding or mating. The best part is that if it’s a new manta, the honour is yours to give it a name. If not, we can share information about that manta with you, such as where it was previously sighted.

By sharing images of manta rays’ unique IDs, we can gain a better understanding of their numbers and locations in Seychelles. This information is crucial for the Seychelles Manta Ray Project (SMRP) ‪@MantaTrust‬ and identifying the best ways to protect them.
