The tuning is all preference. I have played drop C using a heavy 4 string set and special ordering a lighter gauge high string, or tuning it all down 2 steps so that your E string would be a C but not drop tuned. As I have gotten older and stubborn about changing tunings on my nice basses, I just play in standard B regardless what the guitar players tune to. Just learn your scales, stay in key, lock in with your drummer, and play in which ever octave compliments the music the best.
