I'm going to ask the dumb question as I've always wondered this. Why does the shower head need to be water proofed in this manner if water exits the end and the head is usually the highest point so water doesn't run down the wall at that height. Just curious because I know this is done pretty much on all showers.

Itâs good practice.
Typically this opening isnât sealed and itâs covered by a flange. If that flange is loose and any type of moisture goes behind the flange, if that opening isnât sealed properly, you have moisture/mold behind your shower wall.
If you can imagine, you take a shower and the water splashes off your body onto the shower wall, if the shower head leaks and sprays back onto the wall, or just condensation dripping down the wall. It wonât be bad at first, but using the shower everyday, you can have an issue down the road and by the time you find out about it, itâs too late.
What this guy did is go above and beyond.

Tub Spigot area sure, Shower/Tub wall control location, makes sense. Upper "Non-Splash" shower stem? Over the Top but Ok.đ¤ you could just caulk the stem after you have installed it for the shower head. Even if you don't, there isn't going to be much if any water coming through there. Why? Because in 50 years of renovation/construction the usual way water gets there is when there's a bad thread connection inside the shower wall and somebody has one of those shut-off shower nozzles installed, back pressure spraying/leaking inside the wall cavity

Everyone talking about wether this necessary or not but extra cautionary steps is what makes the shower able to last 20+ years with some of the points people are making yeah might as well just not grout the top tiles or waterproof the floor cus as long âas you donât get water there itâs fineâ clowns

People saying overkill donât ever hire them. They cut corners. The purpose of this is to prevent water from entering the wall. Imagine steam or water splashed for years getting in this hole and creating mold? Itâs possible so do it right instead of cutting corners worry about time! Cheap will cost you not the installer!
