For transplant patients, the gift of an organ is not just the gift of health – it’s also the gift of more time with family, more memories made, and more milestones achieved. That’s the gift Sophia Jackson gave Vadrien Alston, a New York City Police Department officer and mother of two. Sophia heard Vadrien’s story about needing a kidney transplant and signed up to be a living donor, despite living in an entirely different state and never having even met her.
After months of testing, Sophia was devastated to find out that her kidney was not a match for Vadrien. But she persisted. Taking advantage of the National Kidney Registry’s Standard Voucher Program, Sophia was able to donate her kidney on Vadrien’s behalf so that Vadrien could receive a kidney from another more compatible donor.
In 2023, more than 6,900 Americans like Sophia heard the call for living donors and stepped up. But the need remains strong. Over 90,000 Americans are waiting for a kidney, and more than 10,000 for a liver – both of which living donors can answer the call for.
