Misinformation Helpline Identifying Tricky Pseudoscience

🚩 Pseudoscientists loves to create the idea that scientific communities are “out to get them.”

But if we slow down for a minute, if the claims made were truly so exceptional, wouldn’t scientific communities want to jump on that?

🚩 Another thing that happens in pseudoscience spaces is claims to have publishings in excess, which they often share in a large document in an attempt to drown you with information in hopes you won’t ever actually read it (Gish gallop fallacy).🚩 But if you do, like I have many times, you’ll realize many of the publishings are irrelevant, poor quality and/or may actually even be considered predatory science.

➡️ “Predatory journals are those that tend to publish low-quality science and deviate from best editorial practices. They might use false or misleading information, or aggressive solicitation practices, and collect fees for publishing work that undergoes little editorial scrutiny. Researchers have previously found that some such journals are indexed in popular scholarly databases such as the biomedical site PubMed, but the extent of the problem is difficult to quantify” (1).

💩 One way to begin to discern the quality of information, is to refer to the CRAAP test. If you don’t remember, here is a brief review (I recommend you read more into it):

⏰ Currency: the timeliness of the information

‼️ Relevance: the importance of the information for your needs

✍️ Authority: the source of the information

✅ Accuracy: the reliability, truthfulness, and correctness of the content

🧐 Purpose: the reason the information exists

Of course, there is so much more to it, but if we s l o w down our thinking, we can begin to move in the right direction 🐢

Thanks for tuning in to another misinformation Monday!

One way I describe the difference between pseudoscientists and scientists is imagine you want to build the best armor a super armor maker will do whatever they think is cool and bring it to other people who only care about how cool it is and they'll graded by how cool it looks and then complain that the armor enthusiast community is against it because they don't like cruel armor and that armors actually better well the people who are the real armor makers will build a set of armor and then try to destroy it to see what it could take and to see if it's actually good armor
