Lamia is a fearsome creature from Greek mythology, known for preying on children. Originally, she was a beautiful queen of Libya and a lover of Zeus, but Hera, Zeus's jealous wife, cursed her out of spite. As part of the curse, Lamia was driven mad and transformed into a monstrous figure. Hera also cursed her with a terrible fate: she would lose all of her children, either through their deaths or by being forced to kill them herself. Overcome with grief and rage, Lamia became a child-eating monster.

In later myths, Lamia was described as a serpent-like creature, often depicted with the upper body of a woman and the lower body of a snake. She was said to haunt the night, luring children away to devour them. Her ability to remove her eyes and later put them back into her sockets gave her a fearsome, supernatural edge.

Lamia represents both maternal sorrow and vengeful rage, symbolizing the destructive power of grief and jealousy. In Greek folklore, she became a figure of fear used to warn children of the dangers lurking in the dark.
