This study on the five senses seems to imply that behind the civilized and polished ways there is nature at work, something instinctive and sexual in nature. The eyes are inviting us to acknowledge what the painter knows and that we as spectators cannot ignore.
I had to look a the whole painting to see that there is also a dog smelling a dead prey. This makes the analogy clearer. The men are there but they are also carried elsewhere and their eyes show this. There might be something ambivalent in human nature, both the refined side and a more animal and instinctive side that can easily overpower it.

"The Sense of Smell," painted ~1744 to 1747 by Philippe Mercier
Short background 👇
This painting is interesting to me because the title and the image seems to imply a pretty simple piece of art, yet I feel like there is more to it than that. I couldn't find anything suggesting that anything else is being symbolized in this painting. But I feel like the hunting has something to do with it. The reason for thinking this is because the women do not look at the audience, instead they're looking at the men, while the men don't look at the women but rather look at us. This is a little strange to me and I wonder... is it the men who are hunting or is it the women?
What do you think is happening in this painting. Do you see any symbolism I might've missed?
Thanks for watching and learning about this beautiful painting with me! ❤
