Networking vs Social Climbing - Know the Difference Before You Burn Out

Networking is about mutual exchange. You're building relationships with people whose goals, values, and visions align with yours — so you both benefit from the connection.

Social climbing, on the other hand, is about proximity chasing- trying to get close to people simply because of their status, without considering whether you bring anything they actually need

Unless you're paying in some form for proximity, you'd be burnt out.

Here's the problem:
A lot of people "network" in spaces where their values, skills, and contributions aren't relevant. They go to events, join groups, or chase introductions in circles where they're more of a spectator than a participant. And then they leave wondering why no doors opened.

The truth?
Real opportunities come when you're in rooms where your value is clear and your presence is mutually beneficial. When you focus on solving problems, offering insights, or bringing resources that matter to the people you're connecting with, you stop "climbing" and start collaborating.

Moral of the story:
Stop trying to sit at tables where you're not needed. Build your own table, or find the rooms where your seat is already waiting.
