A tiger's tongue is extremely abrasive, even rougher than coarse sandpaper. It is covered in tiny, backward-facing spines made of keratin called papillae, which allow a tiger to effectively strip flesh from bone, remove feathers and fur from prey, and even scrape paint from surfaces. If a tiger were to lick a human hand repeatedly, its tongue could easily strip away the skin.
