Our team have uncovered the remains of an industrial-scale Roman pottery production site near to Poole Harbour, as part of ongoing work with Kier, Environment Agency, RSPB and Natural England to adapt over 150 hectares of land into a diverse wetlands habitat.

A whopping 17,000 fragments of pottery and two kilns have been uncovered that tell us the Romans were making a type of pottery here called Black Burnished ware, fitting into a wider industry around Poole Harbour. Our discoveries are helping us to understand the processes and challenges the potters might have faced achieving that specific Black Burnished ware finish.

But that’s not all! This site at The Moors at Arne and our team of expert archaeologists will be on #DiggingforBritain this week to take you behind the scenes.
