The golden ding-dong cap theory seems to be the one that stuck most in the public’s imagination. “He has everything—armor, weapons, wealth. Even the penises of these people were gold,” archaeologist Vladimir Slavchev joked in a Smithsonian article about the Varna Man.

However, other archaeologists have also speculated a more mundane use for the cap: that it was used to cap off a belt, which the ground failed to preserve.

I wasn’t able to find any information as to why the Varna Archaeological Museum placed the gold cap between their reconstructed skeleton’s legs. Perhaps it was an honest mistake, or maybe it was meant as a joke or to stir visitors’ interest.

If that was the case, they certainly accomplished their goal.

From more recent images of the display, however, it does seem like the museum corrected the replica and placed the gold cap in its proper spot.

I’d love to see a reconstruction if his face. And where was it found. I think that cap may have been at the bottom of a sheath for his gold handled axe.

Interesting how they call it a "gold treasure found" when in reality it is grave robbery

After reading the comments, I understand what people are saying about this being disrespectful. They can make replicas to display. Graves should not be disturbed.

Thank you. I was wondering if the gold cap may have been the pommel of his sword. As much I would enjoy looking at the simple yet gorgeous glory of the gold jewelry and items that were with him part of me wishes they left them him as he was supposed to be.

I just imagine the people who buried him being absolutely incensed at the thought of grave robbing plebes putting his possessions, the sacred artifacts they respectfully placed in his tomb for all eternity, on display in some cheap room and charging money for other plebes to view them.

Let's face it: this man probably hoped to find fame and immortality in afterlife, and by displaying his remains and treasures in a museum, we have done exactly that.

Any idea as to his age at death? His ethnicity? His height? His cause of death? Note that the bracelets that went over his upper arms show he was very thin.

I get that you can't just leave gold laying around, it's going to get stolen, but they could have respected his remains.
