You wait for the water to boil, you gently drop the eggs in the water and you wait. I usually get them cold from the fridge, so my timer for soft-boiled eggs is 6 minutes, for a soft center 7 minutes, and for hard-boiled eggs 9 minutes onward is good.
I also put them in cold water/ice water when they are done, bc it helps make the eggshell easier to pick at, and also it stops the egg from cooking further. Some people use baking soda in the water, others make a very small hole in the eggshell before boiling them, but this os what works for me.

Put eggs in water, THEN boil it. Once it reaches boiling point, leave for 2 mins for soft boiled, 3-4 for medium, 5-6 for hard boiled eggs. If making soft boiled eggs, as soon as you take them off the heat, put them in a bowl of cold water for about a minute to stop them cooking any further
