I have an antique book written in mid 1800s. It’s an autobiography by a man who was tricked on board to help make food $ in Europe for his family. He was 17 & only came ashore for good after retiring as captain. He was kidnapped by the whaling ship. The moral of the book… he had to quit the whaling industry bc he saw so many cachelots (sperm whales) try to fight for their valve’s lives, the males for the females… and so on that as he aged, he looked back on what he thought was a successful career, questioning what he’d been part of. Very powerful. Almost too graphic to read on bc the descriptions of how & what would happen to any who tried to defend, well it was rough reading but an awesome find at an antique store!
