A short overview of the evolution of humankind and their different archeological sites in Europe. Throughout the millennia, they have spread from Africa, and formed first settlements.
It is important to note that Human development was not linear, from one species to the next. Instead, different species could inhabit the same areas at the same time. These interactions could range anywhere from friendly to hostile.
Australopithecus abandoned trees for flat ground and is capable of standing on two legs. They are gatherers that already live in groups and perhaps even use tools.
Homo Habilis had smaller jaws and teeth and was capable of choosing different types of rocks for different tools for different purposes (cutting, scraping, crushing..).
Homo Erectus was a tall, athletic, fast, with hairless body. They had longer legs and were capable to travel longer distances. Members of this species were the first hunters, first users of fire and first one that traveled outside Africa. They were the longest-lasting human (homo) species.
Archaic Homo Sapiens or Homo heidelbergensis are the first to live in colder climates and actually capable of controlling fire. They were also the first to build simple shelters and bury their dead.
Homo Neanderthalensis had physically adapted to colder climate with a stocky frame and bigger nose. It also had larger brains and could communicate with sounds, but not fluent speech. It creates clothes, symbolic and ornamental objects, performs music and cares for the dead and infirm.
Homo sapiens sapiens has a larger brain, leaner frame and is capable of fluent speech. We are technologically advanced and social beings, capable of abstract thinking, inventing, creates music, visual arts, rituals...
These are only a few of human species and many more have been discovered in recent years, such as Nesher Ramla Homo type, Homo Longi and Homo Luzonensis.
