As well as being important in the local communities, grassroots music venues are widely acknowledged as the ‘research and development’ department of the music industry. But the economical impact of the Covid-19 pandemic and associated restrictions, increased energy prices, noise complaints and developments are making it hard for these venues to survive.
In December 2023 one of the best-known grassroots music venues in the UK, Moles in Bath, filed for insolvency stating that the rise in costs and overheads and the impact of the cost-of-living crisis have made it impossible to continue.

In my experience, people are just horrible these days. Bands get judged, insulted, attacked and while this isn't new and some do continue, they also don't get supported in these venues and instead find success on social media (tiktok/instagram, etc). So what's the point of even performing in these small venues, when these bands can bypass the hate, ridicule and lack of support and go straight to the bigger venues? It's a business and if money can be made by cutting out certain aspects of the development, then any band in their right mind would take it.
