As a parent with shared custody of a teenager, birthdays are an exception, especially if the kid wants to go. I can guarantee OP would lose it if her ex did this to her.

Most custody agreements have the mother having the kids on mothers day and the moms birthday and dad having them on fathers days and the fathers birthday. He should have told the mom he was picking her up from school but yes mom was wrong. Mom needs to be happy that her daughter has a dad that wants to spend time with her. And the daughter is never going to forget what the mom did. Just my opinion! Anyway

This couldā€™ve all been avoided if they had just agreed to have a day which OP takes the daughter on one of the dadā€™s daysā€¦ šŸ’€

this is seriously petty, she is 15, and if she wanted to be there you should have swallowed your pride in favor of not damaging your relationship with your daughter. Keep this up and your daughter will be walking out of the house every chance she gets just to spite you.

All I can say mom is enjoy the next 3 years. Because after that, your daughter is probably going to go low or no contact with you

ā€œBecause I have my reasonsā€ like getting back at your ex instead of putting on a brave face and doing what is best for your daughter.

This sounds like mom was punishing her 15 year old for her dad. Like you divorced him, don't use your kids as bargaining chips. Just because it is your day doesn't mean she is your property... she wanted to go to the birthday dinner for what is her dad. Not your ex. During my grandmothers funeral my cousin who was raised by grandma and grandpa most days, was supposed to be in her moms custody. Her mom just wanted her at her place because "its my day so you cant have her because grandma died. My cousin and i found a loophole. She asked if she could spend the weekend with me (her cousins house) She said yes just not your dad. Problem solved. She got to go to her grandma/legal gaurdians funeral and she actually was able to play her flute and say goodbye the way she wanted. We cried a lot that weekend. Valentines Day still sucks for me.

The only issue I see is him picking her up without informing mom first although that wouldn't have been an issue if she wasn't being petty

OP is still hurt and using the daughter in her ā€œget backā€! The father shouldnā€™t even need permission for his daughter to attend his birthday celebrationā€¦ itā€™s almost expected to be there. Like he should attend her celebration. Parents can be weird.

And when your birthday is on his day I guess you can't complain when your daughter doesn't want to be with you.

The mom and dad are both wrong here. The mom has a right to be upset that her daughter was taken from school without her knowledge. The dad is wrong for just taking his child from school and bonus turning off his phone because he probably knew his ex would be mad. The mom is in the wrong for being petty. Just give him the day and be done. If my ex pulled that he would be totally responsible for our child getting home safe and sound. Btw the daughter was totally wrong for not informing her mom about her leaving school and going off with her dad.

Absolutely you are!!!!!! She is old enough to make choices for herself. If she wanted to be at her father's party you should have allowed her to be instead of allowing your pride to get in the way. Jealousy isn't a valid reason!

As a parent the fact that she didn't let her daughter see her father on his birthday is shameful and sad I feel bad for dad and daughter.

Wrong on both sides imo. First off, the daughter (if I remember correctly) is 15ā€¦in my opinion, and legally I believe, thatā€™s old enough to decide where she wants to go (parents wise). The mom was kinda out of bounds for not letting her daughter attend the birthday party, like ofc it was her day, but I feel like itā€™s a special occasion and doesnā€™t have to be so strict. But the father shouldnā€™t have picked the daughter up from school.

Now, say if the father had maybe substance abuse issues or didnā€™t hang around good people and the mother was scared of this, then thatā€™s one thing, but none of that was mentioned so I donā€™t think it was the case.

Yes And no if he was stealing her then that is not all right, but if he wasn't Taking her for a long time, then it's all right for him as long as he will give her back.

OP was wrong for not making an exception. She's was being petty. However, he handled it wrong. He shouldn't have took her out of school without telling her.
