Using your thumb is a nice skill to have, but not learning barre chords will really hold you back

I use my thumb more than I use my pinky sometimes, and it started as Hendrix technique attempts, but it's grown to the point that i change positions around the instrument differently. I definitely recommend trying this, but stretch your hands and wrists first. 😂

I’ve always thought the normal D chord sounded too thin from only playing the 4 top strings so I decided long ago as a beginner to play every D chord as a D/F# with my thumb wrapped around the top of the next to the second fret of the low E. Makes the chord sound much more full in my opinion even though it turns the bass note into the 3rd of the chord.

I’ve started experimenting lately with using my thumb on the A string too. It’s great for playing bass/chords/melody at the same time without having to jump all around the neck! It’s not just about convenience, I oftentimes physically can’t play the notes I want to when I have to play an E string bass note in a different position.

I didn't know you could do that with your thumb! All these years I thought thumb being used in guitar was illegal in the guitar world. Thank you for putting this information out there, Kyle! 😁

Brian May used his thumb a lot too! For chords, but also to add bass rhythm to his solo playing to thicken up the sound.

This can work well for some chord shapes but if you don't have big enough hands or enough flexibility it's easier to slide your grip down placing your thumb on the back of the neck wich makes for a nice position to play traditional bar chords with the flat index finger 👍

Always found it hilarious how so many guitar teachers will tell you to keep your thumb down yet you could see some big name guitarists just the opposite. Appreciate how you explain its more a style type thing, makes my guitar playing feel less uncouth or improper.

Its the same reason I wasn't able to get into music school .. they claimed habits were too far gone to teach me anything .. self taught using your thumb was a truly bad habit when applying to a music school in the 80's

It also helps if you have big hands. Look at the mitts on Hendrix and SRV.

Idk, I think barring those chords are easier, but it's nice freeing up your pinky to add extra notes for fills
