I had the early stages of periodontal disease. For years I had red sore gums that bleed when I brushed no matter how often I brushed. It got worse about 6 months ago and I started to have this terrible taste in my mouth. Went to the dentist and spent $1000 on the treatment which included 3 lavages (they put a vibrating tooth scaler in the pockets of your gums and you usually bleed alot). They then prescribed paroex mouth wash, brushing at least twice a day, using a water pick once a day, brushing the mouth wash into the gum pockets of my teeth, and flossing. For the first 2 weeks they had me put the mouth wash in my water pick to spray it into my pockets. It is a major routine work and at times I feel like dental care is all I do but it has paid off. Gums have not bleed since beginning of treatment, the swelling is gone, and I have had no gum recession (other than when I was unable brush as often because I was on and international trip). I still wonder if I could have saved a lot of money by them just prescribing the mouth wash and techniques instead of the painful treatments. Just remember. Mouth wash, brushing twice a day, and cleaning in between the teeth is key (weather with floss or a water pick).

Go to the hygenist and get a root scale and planning ( deep clean) once that's done you need to maintain your oral hygiene routine at home. It's difficult at first but ensure you floss daily and brush twice daily- and if you can ( after lunch). After lunch at work, the plaque tend to have a party in your mouth. If you can floss after lunch that would be even better. In addition a little tip: Get those inter dental brushes - dip it in chlorhexidine gel and push the brushes in between each tooth - allow the gel to saturate the gums in between the teeth. Do this before bed, and you'll notice a MASSIVE difference! This is coming from someone whose pocket gums were reading 5-7. Now mine is 0 to 1 and a few 2's.

It also comes to your diet- if you sit and scoff processed sugars all day- like cakes, donuts, lattes with whipped cream and candy...then all you are doing is feeding the bacteria in your mouth. My mouth was so bad- I could feel a sticky residue everyday! - Eat more fish, drink more water, have bone broth (to help remineralize the bone loss) and more grean leafy vegetables.

people don't understand the value of dental hygiene until the problem gets worse

What pisses me off, is that my old dentist (when i had my first signs of gum disease without knowing) said after each checkup and general cleaning "You're teeth are fine" and off I went, believing my bleeding gums was normal. He should have seen by then that my gums were getting infected and my bone was slowly lowering, because he X-Rayed my gums a few times too, but no, nothing at all. Now fast forward to 5 or so years later I have a new dentist who is much better and he is the one that really taught me what my problem is with my teeth/gums, but it's too late now, Half my bone is eaten away and my gums were so swollen it hurt and I had the most disgusting breath imaginable 24/7. So my good new dentist advised me to go see this gum specialist ASAP, which I did, and the gum specialist was most definitely not impressed with my gums :( So I had my gums cleaned very thoroughly with anesthetics and a swollen face. BUT it worked, My gums are not swollen and red anymore, they're a nice light pink tone and they have gone back to their normal size, I no longer have bad breath anymore (so happy about that one) and my gums don't hurt. I bought an electric tooth brush (so much better than a manual toothbrush) because it really gets the bad areas at the ends of your teeth in the back, I also use Listerine mouth wash once or twice a day and I floss once everyday before bed time. I just got for Christmas the Philips Mechanical Air/Water Floss, which makes flossing faster and easier too, you should invest in one of those too :) makes taking care of your gums so much easier! But unfortunately I have to keep taking care of my gums till I die to prevent it from worsening rapidly in a short amount of time, I've also cut out soda and sugar from my diet. Once you have gum disease, it never goes away, only thing you can do is slow it down from getting bad too soon.

I used to brush once a day as a kid. For several years Ive been brushing and flossing twice a day. Now im going to brush and floss 3 times a day to prevent this from getting worse. I dont have gingitivis, but I notice that my teeth are weak and sensitive along the bottom at the gumline. I told my dentist about this 3 years ago (my last visit) and he said it was fine, just keep brushing. He should have at least informed me that I had the early stages of periodontal and then educated me on wh

A Healthy gum tissue is not sore, tender, and does not bleed, I am in dental hygiene school and i reccomend an interdental aid like floss, plaquers, a water pick, or even a tooth pick. The best aid is one you will USE. YouTube is your best friend look up brushing methods, and the proper way to floss or use one of the interdental aids. Be sure to drink water and avoid sugars and carbs not just in drinks but your diet overall. The longer the carbs and sugars rest on your teeth it reacts to the bacteria in your mouth produces an acid and releases toxins which is what leads to cavities and periodontal disease in majority of cases.

Just got treated for this , I thought it was gonna be something so painful and crazy but it was quick easy and no pain at all during procedure, more like an unpleasant feeling but nothing crucial. sore gums and teeth after numbness goes away but nothing crazy.

i had periodontal disease for about 5 years until i got a real job that had benefits. I had to do deep tissue scaling on my upper teeth. it sucked. I hate flossing, but i do it constantly, about 4 ti,kes a week. I know i should do more. All im saying is that maintenance is necessary to keep your mouth clean.

I will be a freshman in college this fall. How do I pay for treatment before it is too late. I've always had bleeding sensitive gums, since I was 8. The expenses are my barrier. How can I possibly pay for dental care?
