Timtom is being ferried from Camp Buluh across the river to the forest on the other side by boat. As part of our soft-release programme, she is taken out of her overnight enclosure every day to practice the skills she’ll need for a life in the wild.

We change the areas of forest that the orangutans we care for spend their time in to give the trees a break from intensive foraging and allow the orangutans to acclimatize to different habitats.

Timtom decided that she didn’t want to leave the boat at the first stretch of forest she was taken to, so she is being escorted further down river to a section more to her liking.

We’ve seen a marked change in her attitude to travelling by boat. When she first arrived, she wasn’t sure about the new mode of transport, however, she has quickly become used to it.

And she seems to find any excuse to stay onboard. A tub on the boat which she can use to splash herself with water appears to be providing a lot of entertainment and is an extra incentive to delay the journey as much as possible!
