NTA but people have to concider how the son feels in all of this hes stressed has hightened emotions and doesnt know that his dad knows so hes probly gonna be put off, however if my dad reacted like this i would have been relived, i think eventually if the dad just apologizes and explains why he said what he said then they can laugh about it one day together and the son will appreciate having such a chill dad. Just bc your not the asshole doesnt mean you shouldn't own up to your words and apologize.

NTA. OP already knew his son was gay. Being gay in the 2000's isn't so dramatic anymore. My aunt told her daughter that the first step is admitting it. When my cousin finally told her. Personally the whole family knew my cousin was gay and was just waiting for her to acknowledge it.
