Hollywood actors' union slams AI ‘actress’ Tilly Norwood as threat to performers

The debut of an AI-generated “actress” called Tilly Norwood has triggered a backlash from Hollywood’s performers union, SAG-AFTRA, which condemned the use of “synthetics” to replace human talent.

Tilly Norwood, a photo-real, twenty-something fictional character with a British accent, was unveiled on Saturday at a film industry summit in Zurich by London-based AI production studio Particle6. She appeared in a 20-second parody video about an AI-made television show, alongside 15 other AI characters.

Eline Van der Velden, the Dutch actor-producer behind Particle6, claimed talent agents were beginning to show interest, telling Variety that a talent agency deal was likely within months. She described Tilly as a “creative work” intended to spark conversation.

SAG-AFTRA, which represents 160,000 performers, rejected the notion, stating: “Creativity is, and should remain, human-centred. The union is opposed to the replacement of human performers by synthetics.”

The union noted that Tilly was created from training on the work of professional actors “without permission or compensation.”

While AI has long been used in special effects, experts say a convincing AI-generated lead performance remains distant. USC’s Yves Bergquist dismissed current hype, saying: “Scarlett Johansson has a fan base. Scarlett Johansson is a person.”
