In my early years in the army, i spent some time in Panama. There is no way i would let me daughter and her friend to travel there. There is a lot of bad things going on in those jungles.

I've been to Panama and hope to never go back. We were chased by robbers and then "rescued" by a man in a stolen car that led to police intervention.

This is one of those cases where you just can't stop thinking about all the possibilities that could have happened to them. A really tragic story nonetheless.

I was in Mia Flora Peru in 1991. It was 1 am. I was standing on the balcony looking out on the streets. There was a group of 6 kids 3 girls and 3 boys they were standing at the light waiting to cross laughing and having a good time A yellow car sped through the light stopped 4 men ran from the car 2 grabbed a girl under her arms pushing her backwards while the other 2 grabbed her at the knees they ran back to the car and threw her in the back seat getting in with her. I will NEVER forget her screams. Or the fact that not one of the kids came to her aid this all happened in about 10 sec 15 secs tops. I knocked on the door of land lord and told him. He also did nothing. My point jungle or not Evil can show up anytime any place.

I have a friend from Panama .....she said going into the jungle is suicidal.... there are way too many dangers in the jungle not just from the animals but from bad jungle people too.

My mother's from Panama and she made sure that I knew to NEVER go anywhere alone. The jungles of the country I took will never go without proper preparation. There are unknown tribes and people that do things like this to any traveler which is super sad. I'm so blessed to be here and born here. God bless everyone who reads this.

Be truthful with your kids people. My mom used to get mad at my dad for telling stories of his travels around the world. He had a lot of awful stories, and he would always add to think positive, but I need to know the reality of things. All of these stories steered me away from drugs, putting myself in unsafe situations, and having a little more common sense compared to my peers.

They veered off the path to explore (apparently they had habit of doing so when hiking in Europe) one got badly injured and could no longer walk and the other got disoriented as to the direction of the trail. Lost and not wanting to leave her injured friend behind for predators etc. the other chose to stay with her. The injured one eventually died and the survivor then set out on her own, found the nearby river but was likely too weak to keep going and just stayed there hoping someone would come along. No one did so she died as well (plenty of ways to do so in a rainforest.)

The remains that appeared bleached were of the first to die and were the result of the phosphate rich excrement of the cadaver beetle species which finished the decomp process.

The attempts to unlock the phone were likely made by the last one alive (whose own phone was already dead by then) in hopes of being able to make a "good bye" video and/or explain what happened. They likely never thought to get the password for it until it was too late.

Not mentioned here but the odd photos of the night sky found on one of the phones were likely the result of using the camera flash in an attempt to get the attention of a plane. That area is one of the corridors used by drug trafficking pilots. They fly low and without any of their running lights on so one could have been heard but not seen. Due to their illegal activity, if a signal was seen, they wouldn't be able to alert authorities without having to explain why they were flying over that area.

The Travel channel show "Lost in the Wild" did an episode about this & walked the trail themselves following the photos on the camera the girls had, interviewed the woman who found the backpack & local law enforcement. This story is so much darker than you might think. Also, they went for a full day hike, not to walk a friends dog. The trail they hiked is a trail that drug traffickers use to muggle drugs into & out of Panama & also organ trafficking is a problem in that area. This story is so sad 😢 I truly hope they didn't suffer. Lost in the Wild did a great job & i highly recommend watching this episod

Wait, 5 days??? Damn good battery.... Even if I kept my phone shut off any time I wasn't using it, it still wouldn't last that long

Unexplained:
-Why all the call attempts were made at specific times (11am, 1pm, etc), indicating they were under some duress, and could only attempt during those times.
-The bag was emptied first, and not all of the belonings were found. It also appeared to have been thoroughly washed and cleaned.
-The girls were missing and alive for far longer than would have been possible on their daily ration of food and water that they took with them on their trip.

Just for anyone wondering, im spanish and i look all the information avaliable on this case, the most probable thing that happend to them is that a local offer a walk to the jungle, and they got killed and dismembered somewhere else, after that the amount of attention this case recived, someone got scared or wanted to claim the reward the family put to find the girls, and drop the backpack of the girl and some bones bleached (only a foot and some bones where recoverd not the full skeletons) after the remainings where found two boys that where hanging with them partying before the incident where found dead near a river drowned, so its probably a gang that killed her and the guys when they try to talk about the case.

Never go in the jungle without a group. They had no weapons or no men with them. Makes no sense to travel or move like that. Always be careful.

I had just arrived to Panama when this happened 😢may they rest in peace. The locals say it was the indios conejo a cannibal tribe living in that region . Everything is kept silenced to avoid tourists from not visiting again

I watched Mr. Nightmare cover this story in one of his videos, and he, and many others who have taken this trail, believe the guide was responsible for their murders seeing as many people reported he acted...uncomfortably weird around female guests.

Out of all the cold-case/true crime stories I have seen, this is definable one of the more disturbing ones.
