The truth is airplane tires are inflated to about 200 psi but they rarely explode. If they do, it's usually because of underinflation.

I had no idea how much pounds of tires's rubber are left on runway. Thanks for the information.

I worked for a company that does the rubber removal on the runways at SFO. Can confirm that we would pull about 3-4 cubic yards of rubber out in a single shift.

I was the Maintenance Administrator of the EA-6B prowler. One of my assignments was to keep track of the landings of each air craft. The tires had to be changed every 100 landings.

I like how he’s not just rambling about what we can already see, instead he’s being informative and interesting.

I noticed the butter touch down. Beautifully smooth. Nice job captain.

I spoke with a Q400 mechanic, he said the tires can be rethread about 4 to 5 times but usually replaced after 3.

I worked with airplanes and this group of new hires were inflating the main landing gear tires using the standard equipment. However they had it on the high pressure setting instead of low. Sadly by the time the maintenance coordinator saw them and started yelling and running to them to alert them of their mistake, he was too late. They had mere seconds to recognize their mistake before the tire exploded killing both young guys. Sadly their family couldn’t sue because they had been trained properly and it was documented that they had been trained several times months before the incident. Me and several others left the company shortly after due the PTSD caused by witnessing the disintegration of those young men.

Those tires also have a Heat plug. if the heat reaches excessive heat, the plug melts and deflates tire to prevent blowouts.

A tire explosion is what caused the crash of Air France 4590, which is often referred to as "the crash that killed the Concorde." There was debris on the runway that shredded the plane's tire, causing it to explode. The Concorde needed specially engineered tires because it required a higher ground speed for take off. According to Wikipedia there were 7 other major incidents with the Concorde's tires exploding, prior to the crash of Air France 4590, but this was the only fatal incident.

All Concordes were grounded while the crash was investigated. Safety recommendations were made and the Concorde was approved to return to service... on the 7th of November 2001.

I currently work for a company that retreads the tires and situations like this are some of our worst nightmares. Glad to see they landed safely!

Fun fact: tread pieces fall on vehicles on highways around airports all the time.
