Been gming for a loooong time and I'm still hearing complaints every once in a while for things people explicitly told me they liked years ago... I say each time WHY DIDN'T YOU TELL ME!? and they never give a good reason

Iām new to DMing and started out with Waterdeep: Dragon Heist. Because 1. Our forever DM suggested it and 2. Our forever DM really wanted to play it and I wanted to give DMing a shot. I felt exactly like this. Iām told I was doing well, but thereās always the irrational thought that Iām doing everything wrong.

As a gm as well, I agree that you need to be told about what isnāt working in order to improve. However, I think that even if you have that moment of self doubt when not receiving criticism, you need to try to take what is being said at face value. Otherwise you risk creating a habit of beating yourself up based solely on the idea that they were withholding criticism. On the other hand, I feel like players can sometimes apply the ābeggars canāt be choosersā logic and will withhold criticism from you. In which case I prefer to ask āwhat can I do betterā or āim concerned about xyz what are your thoughtsā over āhow do you feel about this?ā. Purposefully steering your feedback towards improvement rather than āI like it/its fineā

As a fellow DM of 7 years, you gotta have that faith in yourself and the best validation you can get, is seeing how much they are actually enjoying the game. As long as everyone is having fun, you are doing a stellar job
