Just because it was used historically and there's a small number of studies doesn't mean it's a suitable and safe alternative.

You can be allergic to nettle stings and pollen and you would have to cultivate your own to guarantee they were safe for human consumption. The reason we don't continue to use whole plants for specific medicinal purposes is because we now have the option to use isolated compounds that have been rigorously studied and have central reporting systems for side effects and interactions.

When stinging nettle is a diuretic that can cause low blood dugar and uterine contractions, I'll simply endure the hayfever if I can't get a hold of a nice standardised dose of OTC non-drowsy antihistamines.
