One time I had a party that lead a group of duegar in a place that had a portal to the underdark underneath the slums of a steam punk town. They went to the underarm to expand there influence for a good while and I tried to get then to buy a mimic house that they'd control but they refused because if the price despite being incredibly rich from kinda robbing a bank vault that belonged to a secret society in a further out western town.

Yeah, with a setting I have been working on the economy is the hardest part so far. It takes place in a city where all physical objects within it reset after each day. I have just ended up going with a bartering system rather than hard money.

I remember one D&D campaign where I spent downtown using adventure money to set up an underground criminal empire in the main city we operated from. I kept investing in legal and illegal business, coverups, racketeering, smuggling, protection fees, etc. etc. until at some point my DM told me to stop counting money and just said that unless I'm trying to buy something for millions of gold I just had enough for whatever I wanted.
