It is crazy how less popular Judo is - I've talked to probably 30 guys at bars, parties, my gym, etc. That have at least dabbled in BJJ, but never talked to anyone who does or did Judo - and I live in a large city.

The silver lining is that Judo is half or even a 3rd the price of BJJ per month usually, my club is only $75 month and they have classes or open mat 6 days a week.

I can't stress enough how much this is due to BJJ being attached to the UFC's popularity here.

I started my grappling journey many years ago with Judo, it is my first love and still my favorite grappling artā€¦having said that, I do BJJ exclusively now, because, while there are 4 good BJJ schools in my little town of 60.000 or so people, there is no longer a legit Judo club in my entire stateā€¦

I recently started to practice judo in a mma dojo. The gym initially teach bjj and theres always more guys training in bjj compared to judo which is just a few of us. My judo instructor said they're just scared to get thrown around. Haha. I can understand why older guys are hesitant even around my age mid 30s to start judo, body gets more fragile with age if you don't condition it. My 3rd week of training and already injured my ankle which is still in pain for 3 weeks.

The sad part is people donā€™t understand how much BJJ needs Judo.

Judo is hard that's why. It's a huge commitment.

90% of fights go to the ground but 100% of them start standing.

Hey Shintaro, My Judo Brother!!!
I was a Judo Club President
(with Sensei Suda) 25 years ago and we had to compete with TKD then MMA. We took our Abbotsford Judo Club from a modest success to one of the largest and most successful in Canada. We had the right formula then and they could still have the right formula now. I have made a transition into traditional jiu-jitsu for the purpose of practicing a complete self-defense martial art on the street as well as in competition. Let's not forget the bushido. šŸ˜Š

There are not millions of people doing BJJ in America, and we do NOT have 50 times the population of France... more like 5 times

When i started BJJ in 2015, there was really only a couple choices in the fairly large city in live in. Now there is a school at every part of town. Probably 50 schools.

USA Judo should really have a main brain-storming session(s) on how to partner with BJJ schools / people to get Judo bigger in the U.S. Maybe the Olympics coming to Los Angeles in 2028 could also be promoted and pumped up by the BJJ community (that is VERY deep in So Cal)?

About half the guys at my Judo gym also do BJJ. Some started in Judo and some started in BJJ. My hope is that in 5-10 years people are opening more joint academies.

I would have to drive 15+ miles, so the frequency is overstated here. That said, there are plenty of people around that have taken lessons. I can't really talk shop with them, as i don't speak Portuguese and they never learned the Japanese.

I teach my kids and relatives judo and classical jujutsu. However, those lessons are neither public nor for cash.

Amazing how good marketing has pushed BJJ so far.

'Cause judo (like wrestling) focuses on kids competing. There was a big untapped market of adults with money and barely anyone catered to it.

I wish Japanese jiu-jitsu was more popular than bjj personally, I've always wanted to train it, but its just all bjj around for me.

In my BJJ academy we even have judo Sensei such as you may have attended to teach techniques, stand up grasping, etc., which enhances BJJ. If we execute ā€˜ochimataā€™ for example a throw to the mat is executed every third so as not to cause injury.

Judo needs to regain popularity. BJJ is proving to be more lacking than Judo. I mean, BJJ IS Judo with a different goal. But I always said that OG Judo is a complete art and we need that. Thankfully, in my home town, there is a school that teaches OG Judo.
