A new study just came out this week demonstrating that intermittent fasting is equally effective as calorie counting for weight loss. Ninety diverse participants were randomized to one of three groups: calorie restriction, where they had to reduce their calories by 25%, intermittent fasting specifically through time restricted eating where they could eat from noon to 8pm, and then a control who didnât change any of their eating habits. There was a 6 month weight loss phase followed by a 6 month weight maintenance phase, when the intermittent fasters could eat from 10am to 8pm and the restricters counted calories for maintenance. At the end of the year, both the intermittent fasters and calorie counters had equal weight loss compared to control and both groups ate about 400 fewer calories a day, which is super interesting because the intermittent fasters werenât counseled to reduce their caloric intake, it just happened naturally by watching the clock. This study suggests that time restricted feeding could be another option for weight loss that some may find easier to incorporate into their lives. Thatâs what science tastes like.

Calorie counting is way more effective because it makes sure your progress is steady and you actually know how much you're eating instead of just hoping you eat less
